with or without

It is all very different
whether you live in or outside it
if you are in, you are truly special
if you are out, please believe you are still special

Special is completely different
if you are in or outside it
if your are in, you are truly with it
if you are out, please believe you are still with it

Being with is simply different
if you are with, you are permanent
if you are without, you are replaceable

steve aoki

So what do you wear to a Steve Aoki concert? I'm getting more into electro music but by no means do I have a clue how to act or dress like I live it. You may know Mr. Aoki from his infamous mix-up of Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness or my personal favorite, Warp 1.9 with The Bloody Beetroots. He is a jet setting DJ, record producer and founder of Dim Mak Records. While I envy him and wish I had fallen into a path of disc jockeying, I am a little scared to be in a room full of electro house loving hipsters.

I was brought in further to this electro scene by my two girlfriends who are music experts. Our conversation usually goes like this...

Maloka: Steve Aoki is coming to The MID on Jan 14th, you guys want to go?

Beth: I love Steve Aoki. Let me see if I have to work late that day...

Me: I'm down. I'll google him.

I realized quickly, I knew this guy. He definitely appears in a few of my playlists.

Besides exploring new music, the three of us have one common factor that many girlfriends may find amongst each other. We love dressing up and going out together. Even if there isn't an special event or if it's a random Thursday night, the ritual of rummaging through your closet and laying out outfit after outfit while sipping vodka waters is my favorite part of the night. We shop each other's closets and sometimes even the boyfriend's. We take turns seeing how stylish an outfit can get without looking too trendy and then mark our approval on our favorite outfits as if we were fashion editors at vogue.

Inevitably the excitement of a concert such as this one creates a week long buzz on what to wear. It is perhaps an unfortunate circumstance that the opportunity to dress outside your persona does not surface very often. I plan to take advantage of this night and participate in the unknown fashion world of grunge and electro-funk. The world of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love mixed in with a whole lot of Katy Perry.

I still don't know what I'm wearing. I should probably publish this blog and begin my quest. American Apparel and Urban Outfitters sound like a great place to start...

2011 the year of big changes?

As a Taurus, I am pretty comfortable with the way things are. We, the Tauruses,  are born somewhere between April 21 - May 21 and are too stubborn to change without reason. So, naturally, new years resolutions are not my favorite thing. I'm supposed to pick up a new hobby and travel across the world to adopt a child because it became midnight? Don't get me wrong, I am quite spontaneous when it comes to activities within my realm. But I'll stick to challenges I know I can accomplish.

Since I didn't know where to find my resolutions this year, I took each important part of my life and created a goal for it. In no particular order....

Fitness/Health - Yoga.
Career - Give everything a chance. Confidence is key.
Family - Call mom more.
Friends - Be fun. Be me. Be loyal.
Religion - Prayer.
Love - Create memories.
Life - Be myself.

I have officially shared way too much with the internet.

While we are on the subject of sharing our lives, let's discuss other personality traits of my zodiac sign. It is a well known fact that the Taurus is somewhat materialistic, amazing at shopping/finding bargains, and a fashion extradonaire. Although I may not be familiar with absurd changes, trying new styles will always be on my resolution list.

This year I want to try more patterns and experiment with louder color combinations such as olive and orange or different blues and greens together. However, I also love the minimalistic look we keep seeing on the runway. Calvin Klein always gets this style right. The trick is to wear blocked pieces and stick with neutral colors such as black, champagne, olive, and taupe.

This year I embraced a touch of preppiness in many looks. I'm ready to go back to my 4th and 5th grade days and explore the laid back tomboy. But at the same time girlish chic is a hot trend right now and I can't resist a flowy dress in the summer...

Here are my inspiring looks for 2011, some influenced by my good friend in Thailand :)
